Here’s how to declutter your home—the Marie Kondo way.
Marie Kondo is all the rage in the real estate world right now. If you don’t already know, she’s a Japanese lifestyle guru who’s helping people declutter and breathe new life into their homes.
What’s her secret? Go through your household items and see if they spark joy within you. If not, throw them out. To help you get started, we’d like to share with you the best tips for decluttering your home for good.
First, collect all the similar items in your home, such as your collection of books. Hold each one and ask yourself, “Does this spark joy?” If not, it has to go. But don’t worry—it may bring someone else joy instead.
“This shouldn’t be a stressful process! Take your time and have fun.”
You want to go through things in a specific order. Marie starts with clothing, moves on to books and papers, and then goes through the kitchen, garage, and mementos.
Get rid of items that “might come in handy.” The likelihood of them actually being used is very low, and if you do find out you need it in the future, you can buy a new version—one that may actually spark you joy.
Before you buy storage for the items that spark you joy, remove any remaining clutter. And remember, this shouldn’t be a stressful process! Take your time and have fun.
